WHO International EMF Project
About WHO and International EMF Project
Founded in 1948, WHO is the United Nations agency that connects nations, partners and people to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable – so everyone, everywhere can attain the highest level of health.
As part of its charter to protect public health and in response to public concern over health effects of EMF exposure, the WHO established the International EMF Project in 1996 to assess the scientific evidence of possible health effects of EMF in the frequency range from 0 to 300 GHz. The EMF Project encourages focused research to fill important gaps in knowledge and to facilitate the development of internationally acceptable standards limiting EMF exposure.
Chiyoji Ohkubo, Director of JEIC, served as a scientist at the Project Secretariat located at WHO headquarters from April 2005 to March 2007. He is currently serving as a member of the International Advisory Committee representing Japanese government.
WHO Factsheets
Factsheets (including Information Sheets and Backgrounders) are published from the WHO Media Center and distributed to press agencies worldwide to present the official view of WHO under the authorization of Director-General. Regarding electromagnetic fields, 13 Factsheets, 3 Information Sheets and 1 Backgrounder had been published, with some of them revised whenever new information became available.
Factsheets are usually renamed to Backgrounder several years after the publication. After more years passes, they are removed from WHO websites. Since Factsheets represent an important message from the WHO, JEIC preserves the original English version of these Factsheets on its websites.
