Relationship between Power Flow and Magnetic Field Strength of Overhead Transmission Lines

6 Jul 2023

According to the Biot-Savart law, which is used to calculate the magnetic fields around electric facilities, the magnetic field (MF) strength generated from electric facilities is considered to be proportional to the value of the current flowing through them.

In this survey, we measured the MF strength generated by overhead transmission lines for which power flow* values were disclosed. We evaluated the relationship between the magnetic field strength and the power flow value.

As a result, we confirmed that the relationship between power flow values through overhead transmission lines and MF measurement values is significantly proportional, validating the theory of magnetic field strength as calculated by the Bio-Savart law on the actual line.

*Power flow: The flow of electric power in a power grid, which is proportional to the current value.
