Measurements of DC magnetic fields generated by HVDC transmission lines

25 Jul 2024

In recent years, high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines have been newly built or reinforced in Japan to increase the transmission capacity of cross-regional interconnection lines.
In this survey, we conducted measurements of DC magnetic field (MF) generated by all the existing DC transmission lines (a total of 4 lines: two between Hokkaido-Aomori, one between Gifu-Nagano, and one between Tokushima-Wakayama).
As a result, we confirmed the MF measurement values (the synthesis of DC MF) are below the 400,000 µT (400 mT) limit for general public exposure to static MF, as recommended by ICNIRP. We also confirmed that the measured values were very similar to those of geomagnetic field.
